Safety
Turmeric and Liver Safety: What the Case Reports Show and What It Means for Neuralisse
Turmeric liver injury is rare but real. A U.S. network described 10 cases, with 5 hospital stays and 1 death (DILIN 2023, turmeric liver injury). Risk seems higher with piperine and high-absorption products (NCCIH, Turmeric). Neuralisse lists turmeric fifth in a 575 mg blend, so it holds at most about 43 mg, far below the grams used in studies. Stop and call a doctor if liver warning signs appear.

The short version
Can turmeric supplements hurt your liver?
Yes, in rare cases. The Drug-Induced Liver Injury Network (DILIN) described 10 U.S. people whose liver was injured after taking turmeric, and one of them died (DILIN 2023, turmeric liver injury).
In food, turmeric is almost always harmless. The concern is concentrated capsules.
NCCIH, part of the NIH, puts it plainly. Regular turmeric taken by mouth is likely safe for up to 2 to 3 months. Highly bioavailable curcumin products, the kind built to absorb better, may harm the liver (NCCIH, Turmeric).
Neuralisse contains turmeric extract, so its buyers deserve a clear answer about the risk and the dose.
The evidence
What did the DILIN 10-case series find?
The DILIN team reviewed 10 U.S. cases of liver injury tied to turmeric. People had used it for a median of 86 days before they got sick (DILIN 2023, turmeric liver injury).
The injuries were serious. Five people needed a hospital stay, and one died from acute liver failure. In most cases, the liver recovered after the product was stopped, which matches what MSKCC reports (MSKCC, Turmeric).
| Finding | Number | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Cases reviewed | 10 | Small, but from a network that judges cause carefully |
| Median time on turmeric | 86 days | Injury showed up after weeks to months, not on day one |
| Products with piperine | 4 of 10 | Piperine raises how much curcumin gets into the blood |
| Carried HLA-B*35:01 | 7 of 10 | Points to an immune, gene-linked reaction |
| Hospital stays | 5 | Half of the cases were serious enough to admit |
| Deaths | 1 | Acute liver failure |
Absorption
Why do piperine and high-absorption turmeric raise the risk?
Piperine, from black pepper, makes curcumin far easier to absorb. Four of the 10 DILIN cases involved a product with piperine (DILIN 2023, turmeric liver injury).
On its own, curcumin is poorly absorbed and quickly cleared (LPI, Curcumin). Makers who want more in the blood add piperine or use special fat-bound or tiny-particle forms. NCCIH singles out these high-absorption products as the ones that may harm the liver (NCCIH, Turmeric).
Piperine can also change how the body handles some prescription drugs (LPI, Curcumin).
Does Neuralisse contain piperine?
No piperine or black pepper extract appears on the Neuralisse label. It makes no high-absorption claim either. Every line is on the Supplement Facts page.
Genes
What is HLA-B*35:01, and should you get tested?
HLA-B*35:01 is a variant of an immune system gene. Seven of the 10 people in the DILIN series carried it (DILIN 2023, turmeric liver injury).
Some versions of this gene seem to make the immune system react to certain drugs or herbs. So turmeric liver injury may often be an immune reaction, not simple overdose.
Routine blood work does not test for this gene, and a gene test is not a standard step before taking turmeric. The practical step is simpler: watch for warning signs, and stop if any appear.
Expert sources
What do NCCIH and MSKCC say about turmeric safety?
Both say turmeric is usually well tolerated but carries real cautions (NCCIH, Turmeric) (MSKCC, Turmeric).
Not enough evidence
No health use is proven. Usual oral forms are likely safe for 2 to 3 months. High-absorption products may harm the liver. Pregnancy use may be unsafe.
Bleeding and liver
It may raise bleeding risk with blood thinners. Liver injury has been linked to curcumin supplements, including enhanced forms, and improved after stopping.
Studies used 0.5 to 8 grams of curcumin a day, with no settled best dose (LPI, Curcumin).

Order nowWarning signs
What are the warning signs of liver injury from a supplement?
Liver trouble often starts with vague symptoms. It can appear after weeks to months of use, so a product that felt fine at first can still be the cause.
- Yellow skin or yellow whites of the eyes
- Dark, tea-colored urine
- Pale or clay-colored stools
- Itching all over without a rash
- Pain or fullness under the right ribs
- Nausea, poor appetite or unusual tiredness that will not go away
If any of these signs show up while you take a turmeric product, including Neuralisse, stop it and call your doctor the same day. Bring the bottle. A simple blood test can check your liver.
Medicines
Is turmeric safe with warfarin or gallbladder problems?
Ask your doctor first in both cases. Curcumin may increase bleeding risk with warfarin, aspirin or clopidogrel, and it makes the gallbladder contract (LPI, Curcumin).
Blood thinners
Warfarin needs a steady effect, checked with a blood test called INR. Neuralisse also contains CoQ10, which has reduced warfarin's effect in a few cases (LPI, CoQ10).
Gallbladder
People with gallstones or a blocked bile duct are usually told to be careful. The medicines guide covers every ingredient.
The label math
How much turmeric is in Neuralisse?
At most about 43 mg per capsule, which is roughly 41 mg of curcuminoids. That is a best-case ceiling worked out from the label, because the label does not print a turmeric amount.
About 400 to 567 mg of the 575 mg blend must be magnesium glycinate. Blend ingredients are listed from most to least by weight (FDA, Labeling guide ch. IV), and turmeric is fifth.
- 575 mg
The whole proprietary blend in one capsule. The label lists six ingredients, heaviest first (FDA, Labeling guide ch. IV).
- 400-567 mg
The 80 mg of magnesium on the label has to come from magnesium glycinate. Pure magnesium bisglycinate is about 14% magnesium (24.3 / 172.4), so it takes about 567 mg. Buffered forms near 20% magnesium take about 400 mg.
- 8-175 mg
What is left for the other five ingredients together. Because they are listed by weight, the second one can be at most half of that, the third a third, and so on.
The most each ingredient can weigh per capsule
- Alpha lipoic acid≤ 175 mg
- Butcher's broom≤ 87 mg
- L-carnitine≤ 58 mg
- Turmeric≤ 43 mg
- Coenzyme Q10≤ 35 mg
Best case: the lighter, 20%-magnesium form of glycinate. If the glycinate is pure bisglycinate, all five share about 8 mg. The label does not say which form is used.
Even that ceiling is under a tenth of the 500 mg low end of curcumin studies. See the turmeric ingredient page.
Bottom line
Should turmeric in Neuralisse worry you?
For most healthy adults, a turmeric dose this small with no piperine is unlikely to be the main concern. Still, the DILIN gene finding means no dose is risk-free for everyone (DILIN 2023, turmeric liver injury).
Talk to your doctor first if you have liver disease, take a blood thinner, have gallbladder problems, or already use another turmeric product. The side effects page covers the other five ingredients.
FAQ
Turmeric and liver safety FAQ
Can turmeric cause liver damage?
Yes, rarely. The U.S. Drug-Induced Liver Injury Network described 10 cases linked to turmeric, with 5 hospital stays and 1 death from liver failure. Most people recovered after stopping. NCCIH says high-absorption curcumin products are the main worry, while ordinary oral turmeric is likely safe for 2 to 3 months.
How much turmeric is in Neuralisse?
Neuralisse holds at most about 43 mg of turmeric extract per capsule, roughly 41 mg of curcuminoids. The label does not print the amount. The ceiling comes from blend math: turmeric is fifth of six ingredients in a 575 mg blend that is mostly magnesium glycinate.
Does Neuralisse contain black pepper or piperine?
No. The Neuralisse label does not list piperine or black pepper extract in the blend or in the other ingredients. That matters because 4 of the 10 U.S. liver injury cases involved piperine, which boosts how much curcumin the body absorbs and can also change drug levels.
What is HLA-B*35:01 and turmeric liver injury?
HLA-B*35:01 is an immune gene variant. Seven of the 10 people in the DILIN turmeric series carried it, suggesting many cases are immune reactions. Routine blood work does not test for it, so the practical step is to watch for warning signs such as yellow eyes or dark urine.
Can I take turmeric supplements with warfarin?
Only with your doctor's approval. Curcumin may raise bleeding risk with warfarin, aspirin or clopidogrel. Neuralisse also contains CoQ10, which has weakened warfarin in a few cases. Your doctor may want to check your INR more often if you start or stop a product with either ingredient.
How long can you safely take turmeric?
NCCIH says usual oral turmeric is likely safe for up to 2 to 3 months. Longer use has less safety data. In the DILIN series, liver injury appeared after a median of 86 days, so keep watching for symptoms well after the first few weeks of any turmeric product.
